45d distributor problem

Post by MoggyBlue »

So I've fitted My electronic ignition and done 500 miles of very happy motoring and absolutely loving it. my only down side to it is is that I chose to go for the 45d distributor. But was wondering if anyone else has the same problems as I keep having. When I take my cap off and put it back on it takes alot of trying and fiddling to get the cap on and still doesn't always seat right. I now have a bit of a lumpy idle and feel it may be because not long ago the cap wasn't sitting properly but I didn't know. I started the car and got alot of knocking. I took the cap off to the lots of shavings inside where the rotor arm had hot and broken the ht lead points.

So wondered if anyone else has this same problem, if there is a solution thanks guys

I fitted the 45D dizzy and yes I did find the cap clips a little fiddly to snap in but they are shorter than the ones on the 25 it replaced so only to be expected I guess with a new unit. It sounds like you have done some serious damage to the cap and rotor arm so the only solution will be to replace them and hopefully nothing else will have been damaged.

Obviously you now need a new cap and rotor arm..... Why did you keep taking the cap off??? New parts - then LEAVE IT ALONE!

Yeah I find the cap easier to fit now with the clips but it's just getting th cap lined up properly that seems to be the problem and ywah I have a feeling I will need to replace annoyingly :(

Yeah sadly I will do there not much damage to the cap points but I guess they need to be 100% to run smoothly and I took it off as I was checking my rotor arm and it needed a little cleaning

I have found the reason behind the cap not fitting
Sadly was down to the body casting. The cap would not fit properly and sit where it should do

I have had similar issues with the cap (and clips) on Mini distributers of the same type. But if the rotor arm has been chewing the contacts - you probably need at least a new rotor.

sometimes the rotor arms do not go on as far as they should without a bit of fettling and that can make the cap hard to fit .

I replaced the cap and rotor arm. I found a older cap at work that with a bit of fiddling fitted properly. I'll use that for now but did buy a new cap. When I get round to it ill take the distributer out and file the edge to let the cap sit properly
