REAR SCREEN PROBLEMS

I have heard of assistants using their feet to push the screen into place - while the 'fitter' pulls the cord to ease the rubber round the opening.

Now there's an Idea

I helped one of our branch members fit one some months ago using the feet as you say. One person laying on their back inside the car, the other outside with the washing line cord and lots of lube!

Thanks again for all the help full tips.It does seem,as though there is a problem getting the screen past the headlining clips.I may not be using enough brute strength and ignorance.Though I think I have enough of the latter

Excuse me to ''pirate" this post, but (before starting this weekend) I will ask you how to remove ;-) the rear screen.

I'm prepping for the welder-painter and I will start to remove rear screen, headlining etc. all this because of a (long-time) leaking screen with the previous owner.

So based on your experiences, the screen has to come out at the inside; I will open up the lips on the inside while my assistant will put pressure on the outside, isn't it ? Starting from on corner to the other I guess...

Already 'Lookong forward' to try the reverse....ahum...

If your going to fit a new rubber I would just cut the old one away from the outside with a stanley knife and gently push the screen inside the car. If you hoping to re use the old rubber its a case of gently easing it over the edge all the way round and again pushing it inside the car.

I fitted a new rubber to my blue car last weekend with some assistence from some other minor nutters! It was a Baines rubber that has been in the packet for about 5 years waiting to be fitted.......

Anyway we used a lot more washing up liquid as lubricant both on the screen surround and a wipe over the rubber edge that pulls over the window edge. Instead of string we used a metal plastic covered washing line and the screen went in quite easily with no rips

I had been concerned about using too much washing up liquid in case it would react with the sealer, but when we were at the NEC show the week before Stevey spoke to the chap at the Frost counter who sell the Arbo MAst Auto Sealant and he said the washing liquid or shampoo would be fine and would not react with this sealer. So far so good, hasnt been out for a wash yet. Will report back if probs!

Washing liquid is full of SALT and should be avoided. Vaseline/KY/even perhaps Swarfega should be ok.

BMC is right, one of the main ingredients of washing up liquid is salt and that is one of the reasons you should never use it to wash your car!

Great tips, I don't now yet if I'm going to re use the rubber, but just for the sake of 'practice' I would try to save it.

Actually I was thinking ordering a esm rubber soon, (with some front-end stuff, rebuilding kingpins) any experiences with those rubbers ?

The old rubber will be past it's 'use by' date. I would be looking for a new one - but cannot advise which are good and which are perhaps not so good....

Finally managed to fit the rear screen.I found that by smearing the seal with Vaseline,it helped it to get past the headlininf#g brackets.Now for the front screen.

Finally fitted the rear screen after smearing Vaseline all round the seal,it went past the headlining clips fine.Now to tackle the front one.Just ordered carpets from Coverdale,the sample they sent was good,so crossing fingers.The thing is they are cheaper than buying the carpet material and getting my upholsterer to make them
