?asbestos in seats

Post by robandsophie »

Hi,

I have removed my rear seat and found some cotton-wool type substance packing the corners out, rest of seat is genuine sprung and what looks like horse hair padding.
Does anyone know if asbestos was used as a packing material? I also have what is probably the original browny coloured sound insulting cloth, is this likely to be asbestos as well?

I hope not as been working in the car, and only just thought about it :(

My car is a 1968 Minor

Regards

Hi

I think you will find it is Capoc a natural plant fibre..the way to check is to remove a pinch and see if it burns :)

The sound 'insulting' cloth will be hessian/jute

You will find asbestos in a minor..the places to think about are old clutch and brake linings and the dust from these, the exhaust heat shield pad, old gaskets and some of the bitumen impregnated felt trim pieces. none of these should pose a significant danger if handled correctly.

Hi Taupe,

Ah! Insulting cloth yes supposed to be insulating. Well tried lighting it, didn't burn very well, sort of melted with small flame and went black bit like plastic would.
Does that help? The insulating cloth burnt quite well.

I'm sure that if it melted/ burned it wasn't asbestos. Don't think there was any asbestos used inside the Minor, just brakes, clutch as Taupe says.

When I was a kid our school jackets were stuffed with kapok and we've mostly survived
