REAR SCREEN PROBLEMS

Hello I am having a problem,fitting the rear screen in,using a new seal.Have fitted string in it the usual way,but I cannot get the lip in.Is it best to get the top or bottom lip in first.I have done a few on other cars ,but not having a lot of luck with this one so far Len

Did mine fairly recently. Bought a new rubber from Baines, Fitted it (from inside the car as I'm sure you know) at the bottom and one side first, gradually pulling the string and bashing the screen with fists etc. I did have a helper which made a big difference but it fitted without any real problems.

Maybe a wipe round with vaseline would help. Also think you need something heavier than 'string' to do the pulling

Fitted one recently to Steveys saloon, had it in about 2/3rds when the rubber started to rip. Despite taking plenty of time it ended up ripping in 5 or so places so will have to come out again for a new one. Currently have the back screen out of my blue minor to touch in a rusty spot and hopefully cure a leaky screen so will get in more practice!!

Not done a Minor screen but I've used thin plastic coated steel cored washing line to good effect on other vehicles, didn't rip the rubber

^^^^ Agree with above. Use plastic coated washing line - it protects the rubber seal - string is too thin and cuts into it.

I had my rear screen seal replaced last year after some cosmetic work and the quality of the seals leaves a lot to be desired, it leaked badly.
Captain Tolleys creeping crack cure is ok for pinhole leaks but you need a proper sealant to fill the large gaps.......

I have had a couple of goes fitting it,but it seems tighter than some I have done .However I am going to try Vaseline on it and a clothes line

I've used waxoil as a lubricant and thick plastic coated vehicle wiring instead of string - worked well without tears. The professionals use parachute cord.

This wiil seem a silly question,but I am having problems fitting in the rear screen.I have bought a new seal from BAINES but the silly question is ,when the screen is fitted should the broader bit of the rubber seal about an inch wide or the small 1/2" section ,be on the outside.It has been so long since I removed the screen,I have forgotten Len

I think I have answered my own question,the smaller section of rubber is on the outside,and the screen is fitted from inside .

No wonder you were finding it hard I did point out on your original thread that it should be fitted from inside!
Hopefully you'll find the job a bit more straightforward now. I had no trouble at all fitting mine.
The tearing of the rubber that some people encounter is generally from pulling the rubber past the sharp spotwelds around the aperture. I filed these down on my car.

I had very similar problems to David and have now taken my screen out to try again. I have already tried once again but gave up when I had the first small tear. I will certainly check the spot welds.

I thought about maybe using a soft thick cord with lots of lubricant in the hope that would be more flexible/gentle than the plastic-coated washing line?

Otherwise, main difficulty was getting the screen and rubber past the headlining 'brackets' to be close up against the window aperture .... comedy guaranteed watching wife and 6'1 son crammed in the back and pushing glass up against it

stick it in a tub of hot water for a while to soften it,helps quite a bit

Thanks to those who helped with the wiring diagram.The rear lights now work
I am still trying to fit the rear screen,I am using quite thick nylon cord and have smeared the lip with Vaseline.However it almost seems,the window is too large for the opening.When a friend offers the screen up to the opening we cannot get it near enoughto pull the lip over the rim.Looking ,you can see that the rubber goes over the headlining and I have even removed the small length of lining under the window.The rubber did start to split in two places,but I removed the screen before any real damage was done and have glued it with superglue.I have tried to fit it pulling the string from the bottom,but it appears as though the screen isn`t in enough at the top,for the lip to be close enough .

Having another look, if the bottom of the screen is held against the lower opening it touches that.But the top is away from the opening,as though the headlining is in the way

I have heard of assistants using their feet to push the screen into place - while the 'fitter' pulls the cord to ease the rubber round the opening.
