paint colour, different shades?

My traveller is 1962 smoke grey, she is about to have a re spray, The colour is BU 15 but this seems much darker on the colour swatch, I understand mine will have faded, but is the paint mix differant between traveller and saloon?
Also will be using 2 part with a little matting agent in it so as not to make it look to bling!

The trouble is that every paint manufacturer will have their own interpretation of what "Smoke Grey" should look like. The colour swatches are not always accurate either so ask the sprayer to spray a test sample first for your approval. Smoke Grey is not particularly prone to fading so an excellent match to the original colour should be obtainable.

No, the saloons and travellers were exactly the same colour at the time although it is entirely possible that during the 10-12 years the colour was available, it was purchased from different sources and differences occurred. The important thing is to purchase the new paint from an established source and have a bit left over for touching up. Also, keep a record of exactly what was used so that the same product can be obtained again if needed.

I have used "Nexa Autocolour" paints which are the old ICI range and found the match to be excellent.

I hope you are not planning on spraying '2 part' paint at home.... It's very dangerous unless you have the professional protection equipment. And why on earth 'dulling agent' ???

You can achieve perfect results with modern water based paints.
Just take your boot lid to a supplier who will scan it and identify the exact colour match - worked for me!

I agree completely. My smoke grey saloon was a perfect match.

My Smoke Grey is nothing like other Minors! Guy who painted it insists it is correct. I don't mind and rather like it but couldn't use a can for touch up.[frame][/frame]
This photo makes it look more like Bermuda but was taken before I sorted the wood and the rear end had yet to be done - you can see the difference in the roof.

Hmmmm this looks like the usual load of scary rubbish. Firstly getting a spectrum analyser used to match paint isn't very accurate I should know I've got one. Secondly water based paint is good for nothing unless you've access to a heated spray booth or are doing spot repairs with it using heat lamps and in any case you've then got to lacquer it presumably with a 2k lacquer so you've gained nothing 1k lacquer i just wouldn't bother. Thirdly 2k paint is perfectly safe use at home as long as youre using the correct safety equipment ( particulate respirator ) which in all honesty you darn well should be wearing to paint cellulose anyway.

As for shades of paint my ICI book has two shades of smoke grey listed not uncommon some paint colours have as many as five variants some depending on year or factory the car was produced in. Putting matting agent in paint for a full respray seem rather daft just don't polish it.

wow ! Thanks everyone for the advice,my guy has got a sample pot mixed up(son in law works there!) and its perfect.
Ok take the hint ,no dulling agent!
My morris is now in a myriad of pieces as rust and massive holes over the rear wheel arch on the drivers side and wood underneath totally rotten!

Not heard of any. I think they simply sprayed whatever was supplied to them under the colour "Smoke Grey" for example.

I have a smoke grey mog which has two distinct shades, the original being a little lighter and less 'murky' than the more recent coat.

Anyone any guesses what I need to look for to touch things up with?
