The engine should NOT vibrate when you rev it - there's something wrong with it. This is not an engine mount problem.......

As it's such a cheap and easy fix I was only suggesting the engine mounts would be worth a try. Engines DO vibrate hence the rubber mountings to stop vibration and noise transmission into the car. If those engine mounts are too hard , well .
My mog was so noisy and vibrated a lot with the previous owners new mounts (only a few months old). I got replacement original spec mounts from BM and it was honestly like having a different car, no one was more surprised than I was as I didn't think 2 blocks of rubber could make such a difference.

When rebuilding an 'A' Series or replacing the timing chain - the riveted pulley should be the first thing into the scrap bin.
Better to fit a damper pulley or solid pulley.

Sorry - full time work and life always get in the way of Morris fun!

All I've had time to do is swap the condenser (just because I seem to go through them fast) and a couple of other little checks. I'm now running one from the 'Distributor Doctor' which I'm sure weighs twice as much as those from the usual suppliers. This with the fixed mixture, as I mentioned before, has left the engine running more smoothly. There is still a fair bit of vibration being transmitted to the chassis but it's not headache-inducing any more. The 'ticking' from the area around the fan-belt is really bugging/worrying me though, I will be taking the belt off and taking a look at other possibilities when other commitments allow.

I think the ticking and the vibration could both be caused by loose rivets on the crank pulley as noted above. Otherwise, just a coincidence? As you say you are going to remove the fan belt, you should be able to easily check the pulley for unwanted movement?

I should have time to check the crank pulley tonight - is this possible without taking the radiator & front of the car off? Perhaps by lying underneath?

Remove the fan belt, reach behind the radiator down to the pulley and try to jer-jer-jiggle it. You should feel no movement at all on the shaft. If you can then think about going in deeper to see what's wrong.

As the compression is very good and even across the four pistons, the head/ gasket/ valves and pistons are likely to be good.

That leaves us with two other causes.

1) misfire- give the ignition a good service, new plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm.
2) If the noise is not caused by a misfire then I'm afraid you may have to take the engine out for a full strip down to inspect the main bearings and journals. Do you also get low oil pressure??

Took the fan-belt off and tried to give it (the crankshaft pulley) a "jer-jer-jiggle", my feeble arms got no movement from it. In the process of removing the fan-belt I was struck by how out of alignment the alternator pulley was with the other two (see beautiful illustration).

I'll be adding some washers to move it forward a little tonight, can't be a bad thing to sort out.

That won't be helping - and yes it is often necessary to put a washer on the alternator/waterpump connection to get them lined up properly. A new belt may be a wise investment - that one won't have benefited from running out of line.

Replaced pretty much every part of the ignition system short of putting a new dizzy in. Does run better & quieter.

Still rattles (the windows and my teeth, mostly) when disengaging the clutch - so I guess that's what I look at next after learning how a clutch works and is serviced.

And do you feel a strong vibration up through the clutch pedal ? The pressure assembly may be damaged - and when you press the carbon release against it - that's when the vibration shows up?

Hmm. I wouldn't say it's felt through the pedal, more like extreme judder.
