Re: My Engine Rebuild
Thank you for this post. I have rebuilt a ford 1300 cross flow in the past and it is interesting to see the differences between them and will stand me in good stead for a BMC 1098 project in the future.

Re: My Engine Rebuild
I couldn't get a video of it running yesterday because the battery on my phone went flat. I've got one of it being started for the first time though. Here it is:

Re: My Engine Rebuild
It's all done now! New engine and new clutch in and gearbox oil changed. It's like a different car now!!
Obviously I'm running it in so I haven't found out how much it can do yet but so far, I'm extremely satisfied! It sounds completely different from the old one, makes no smoke or anything else that it shouldn't, it's quiet when it's revved - unlike the old one which sounded like it was going to explode - and it's got SO much more power and acceleration. I couldn't believe how sensitive the accelerator had become when I first drove it and also how light and smooth the clutch was. Hills that needed second gear with the old engine can be climbed in top now. Compared to the old engine, it feels like a racing car. I'm very happy indeed!

Re: My Engine Rebuild
I've just been driving it again and I'm simply blown away. The difference is so big it's ridiculous!! Before it used to rev deafeningly up hills in second and now it just pulls up quietly in top gear. I drove up a particularly steep hill that I have to drive up almost every day. I used to crawl up it at 20mph in second with no power to spare and with the engine sounding like it was going to tear itself apart. Today it whipped up at 30mph in third with power to spare and went up to top when the hill got less steep near the top. I just can't believe it. I knew that it would make a difference but I wasn't prepared for so much. Also, the exhaust doesn't smell any more. It used to stink anywhere within six yards but now it just smells like any other car.
All in all it's been an extremely satisfying project and I'm really grateful for all the help and advice I've received. I've had an enormous amount of help from grumpydad and co. and it's very much appreciated as always!

Re: My Engine Rebuild
Hi,
It's still going really well! It hasn't lost a drop of oil or water. I'm not entirely sure how many miles I've done in it as I kept forgetting to write it down! I think it's coming up to 100 now so I'm still running it in. I haven't driven it above 30mph so I'm looking forward to being able to see how it copes at 60 once it's run in.

Re: My Engine Rebuild
Fab, keep us updated, I followed your thread with interest so would be good to hear the results once fully run in

Re: My Engine Rebuild
Just to remind us - was this just new rings/bearing shells (+oil pump)/gaskets/timing gears - and valves ground in?

Re: My Engine Rebuild
It was new rings, bearings, thrust washers, timing gears and chain, oil pump, water pump, oil gallery plugs, valve guides, valve stem seals, cam followers, rocker shaft, thermostat and housing, screw on oil filter conversion, various washers and lock tabs and gaskets. Everything was fully cleaned, the head and block skimmed and the valves ground in. I think that's everything.
Re: My Engine Rebuild
Excellent - so no rebore, or crank regrind. Good value engine build I think. Well done.

Re: My Engine Rebuild
Indeed. The bores and crank were in good condition so I got away with honing. I think I pretty much did everything short of a rebore and crank regrind.
