Jumping out of second gear, but not when de-/accelerate??
Hi everybody,
While enjoying morry to the max (new owner since January and running since 2,5 month after extensive rebuild) the above problems starts to be enoying;
Jumping out of second gear, but definitely not while (hard) accelerate of deceleration, just when 'keeping a slow speed in 2nd' kind of moments....
For the rest, a very silent, smooth gearbox.
Oil changed recently, and it's a ribcase gearbox with a 1098 engine, all original.
any thoughts would be welcome !!

The sooner you strip it and fix it - the less damage there will be...

Thanks,

Almost certainly it will need a new 2nd gear - and a syncro ring. But very likely bearings will be a bit loose too.

Well, that's sounds fair....with the practical 'how to rebuild your gearbox' manual here on the forum rebuilding will be a nice project for this winter...

Found myself a Nice 'project' ribbed gearbox...
Now can start figure out how to recondition a gb (with the perfect manual form the forum).
Will keep you informed about the progress., but already in the mood to start !

My all-black-grease-covered gearbox turned out to be a gold seal one...nice detail....
Once opened (by the inspection cover) it's a really clean and good looking gb, I think....so tempted to give it a try without rebuilding....any easy tips and tricks to check it while on the bench ? (Of course turning, selecting al the gears, etc...)
drained oil was very clean, as was the drainplug(hole)....was stocked horizontally and not standing on the bell housing, so thats a plus....(not al bits stacked in the flywheel-side bearing)

The dog teeth look good there - can you look down inside and see the 1st gear teeth on the laygear? If that's ok - I would give it a go as is !

Re: Jumping out of second gear, but not when de-/accelerate??
So yesterday found myself a bit of time to remove the inspectioncover on my actual, mounted gearbox.
A bit fiddling around and a found the (1st and 2nd gear) selector-fork (the brass colored thing) being just loosely connected to the shaft!
That could explain why sometimes my gb jumped out the 2nd gear, isn't it, I thought to myself ;-)
After fitting it all back and a 'only 2nd gear testrun' I have to conclude that this was indeed the origin of the 'jumping out' problem !
Glad to have a (spare) gold seal gearbox now, but not needed for the moment...

Re: Jumping out of second gear, but not when de-/accelerate??
It's rarely as simple as that - the selector fork doesn't hold the gear in mesh - it just pushes it into place, and then the spring loaded balls/slugs hold it in gear. But - fingers crossed - it's certainly well worth trying it to see what happens.
