Accuspark ignition

Post by Thegoverner1965 »

Hi all,I'm fitting the electronic ignition tomorrow to replace the points and condenser .two questions I have.firstly ive changed to negative earth and swapped the coil wires around.does the new wire now go on the minus from the elec ignition ?.secondly if I need to alter the timing do I turn the distributor clockwise or anti until it slightly pinks and then back off a little
Regards
John

Clockwise till it pinks UNDER LOAD, and then back slightly. I have no idea about the wiring - follow the instructions precisely.

There are detailed instructions for fitting the modules on the help pages of the Accuspark web pages, follow those and you can't go wrong :D

I don't know about the Accuspark ignition module, but when I fitted the Aldon Ignitor one I had to retard the ignition but around 20° compared with the points. Need to get a basic setting and then adjust to give the correct total advance, without the vacuum connected.

Hi all, thanks for all your advice.i fitted the accuspark system and it fired up first time running smoother and a bit more responsive than with the points and condenser.although I carry a spare new set just in case.im very pleased with the results and no timing issues

I have just fitted a Accuspark module in my 948, Is it normal not to have to reset the timing? The car started first time, no lumpy idle, took it for a spin and performs as it should.
Have I just been lucky.......should I do the lottery tonight :D

'Fit and Forget' - yes I would have agreed totally until a few weeks ago.

We fitted the Aldon Ignitor module in 1998 and absolutely no problems since, until we were going down to Portsmouth almost 4 weeks ago and the rev counter started to misbehave at ~5,000 rpm+. Carried on to the ferry and France with the same problem.

A few days later decided to investigate and found that the red wire going to the module was 'stretchy' inside the distributor! Dug out the original points, and with a screw and timing light supplied by the BritAssist support crew on the Euroclassic, we were all sorted in about half an hour.

Looking at one of the pictures, the wires inside the distributor body need to have some slack. Ours did, but as the module moves with the base plate, over a long period of time (17 years and 50,000+ miles) the wires can fret away inside the insulation.

Have just received a NODIZ 3D ignition mapping setup, so it will be interesting to see how that works out. No points, no moving parts, all solid state and very programmable for a modified engine.

I would still highly recommend the 'module' route as it is fit and forget.

I would say that 17 years and 50,000 miles counts as 'fit and forget' :) I hope mine lasts that long. I fitted one of the powerspark 45d distributors about six months ago and it's been going great so far.
