I am never sure if it is because the cars have been stored in fields, or old seats stored in fields, or if it is the dunlopillow type foams just breaking-up / chemicals leeching out that causes a particular smell.
Picking up, more for the frame , a front seat with red viny covers its quite a problem to decide to I keep the covers for other re-use - will the odur ever clear out ?
I'll post pictures of how the seat frames get made up, in case others find it useful.

I can't see how a field would make seats smell, putting them in a field would probably freshen them up! It's more likely from being stored in a damp shed.

No rat evidence, but damp shed almost certainly. When I was on a farm some fields were sweeter than others.

Old dunlopillow does smell as it ages - as does the horsehair they used around the top of the front seats and in the rear seat.
If you are thinking of changing the seat covers I would suggest changing the foam for modern upholstery foam. The horsehair can be "aired" and then sprayed with something like Febreze to freshen it up and remove old smells

Try using a dehumidifier and then leave an air freshener in .Caravan shops sell a container that collects the moisture in a damp car and can be bought quite cheap

The covers did not seem to be damp. I'll find some silica gel crystal stuff, febreeze or shake n vac , and hang on the washing line when its sunny breezy.
