im new and need advice already

well we have just picked the father in laws old Morris traveller, its been stood outside under canvas since 1990 and I'm surprised its not in too bad good condition.
Its a 1969 owned by the same family from new with just 55,000 on the clock, now the wife wants it back to new, or the best I can do, first question and I'm sure there's going to be lots more is, the wood is bad in places so I'm going to replace it all what I'm worried about is, to take all the wood out I understand I need to take of the guttering, but not sure about fitting a new one back on, will it have to be taken off and is there anyone I could get to replace it for me, I live in retford nottinghamshire

Yes you have to remove the guttering to get the wood off.

The guttering is actually in the form of a channel, the bottom of which had drilled holes through which the guttering is nailed through the roof to the top wood rail.

The top half of the U shaped gutter is tapped down to give the shape you see, therefore you need to pry the top half up to get the guttering off complete with nails.

Lots of patience and going back forth with a small pry bar (end wrapped in masking tape), pry gently from the wood side and you can remove the gutter without denting the aluminium roof.

Consider buying Ray Newell's book on the Traveller.
It is a bit pricey, but is a magnificent publication.
Importantly, it contains a section written by Traveller woodwork guru, Steve Foreman, on restoring Traveller woodwork.
I hope the refurbishment goes smoothly.

Have a look at the trav restoration on wheeler dealers, it's on YouTube I'm sure. Or find it on sky.
It's totally nonesense and not to be believed but at least you will see some interesting video of one coming apart and going back together.

I believe there was a car sos on the trav as well, again, a large pinch of salt needed but again, some interesting stuff.

The guttering will be the very least of your worries when replacing the timber frames - worry more about the floors and chassis - hope your welding is up to scratch! And as others have said - read the resto books and the resto topics. Get you local library to buy the books !

Welcome from a fellow traveller owner, luckily I've not had to replace the wood on mine just a couple of local repairs. The gutter is an aluminium section so easily damaged when prising it off so best to budget for a new one. Read everything you can and good luck

I actually thought the wheeler dealers Traveller restoration was one of their better efforts - totally wrong shade of Almond Green though! Yes Ray Newalls Traveller book is essential for wood advice. The Haynes Restoration manual is good but its a shame its all black and white.

I replaced the wood on my series II. I resolved never to do another, although it would probably be easier the second time. As others have said, don't form too many optimistic hopes about the extent of the work, but it will be worth it.

I questioned Fuzz on this when he did a presentation at my local car club. I said surely they didn't actually alter the woodwork to suit the bodged metalwork and he agreed. Apparently it was a case of the production staff getting it wrong in the editing, all the body work was made good and the joiner fitted the frame correctly
He also said that the Lancia in the later series nearly broke the budget for the whole series

Hi welcome. Im currently rebuilding a traveller too. Guessing youve got a land rover aswell? Iv got a 200tdi defender that iv put on a galvanised chassis. The Morris seems easier so far. Even tho iv only stripped it and started the wood.

hi thanks for all the reply's, yes I did have a defender, sold it last week giving me room for the traveller, I also need to change the inner wings, one has been repaired ish the other one needs doing so doing both is best I think.
So if anyone has links or pics on how to do this id be very grateful, are the welded in ? has yet ive no welding experience but will ing to give it a try
