IS THIS CORRECT

Post by EYEMAN4EVER »

Hi all,

These are pictures from a unrestored 1952 split glass MM series 2. Can anybody please tell me if the engine compartment is as it should be or have any things been changed. Specially the mounting of the dynamo (This is very different to the picture in Ray Newell's Original Morris Minor book)

Thanks in advance

I think you're confusing 'Series II' with the 'MM', which is what it looks like you've got there, with the Morris side valve engine and air cleaner. It will likely be an MM if it's 1952, as I think the first SII cars were 1953. Look at pictures of MMs and you'll see what I mean.

It gets confusing, as a lot of people use 'MM' as an abbreviation for Morris Minor, as opposed to for the first 'series' of cars.

The dynamo bracket looks like a repair. The casting that would have been on the cylinder head is prone to breaking, the one on my MM had broken and had a similar sort of home made bracket. I think you may have a slightly earlier sidevalve engine in your car, I think by 1952 most of them had the aluminum cast water jacket running along the side , Im sure someone will be along shortly who can correct me if Im wrong.

the fuel pump on lefthand bulkhead as seen in picture is wrong and I dont think the plastic pipes feeding the carb are a good idea, the distributor is a vacuum advance/retard unit which is wrong for that engine as well

The engine is the earlier USHM2 side valve (1948=50) which does not have a water pump, a vew of the other side of the engine will show if it has an oil filter which was not fitted to the earliest engines. The oil bath air filter is normally fitted to the export cars. The original coil was a black unit bolted at an angle on the bulkhead. An SU fuel pump should be fitted to the side of the battery box.
It looks as though the head gasket needs replacing
Could you show photos of the whole car and the chassis plate and I should be able to give more info
