For stubborn ones, I plant my feet on the floor near the column and place my hands under the wheel hub and then pull up and push down with your feet. While holding that force have someone give the nut on the column and smart whack. It's a straight spline and there is only a bit of area that is forced together by the tightened nut.

Agree witn the above but do it with the nut still on but loose, avoids you wearing a steering wheel on your face as it comes flying off.

I think I'll give the contact cleaner a try - it certainly seems to make sense with the 'sweet spot' I've found.
I certainly did keep the nut on when I was attempting removal (turned on a couple of turns) I'd read about 'incidents' of almost concussion.
I'm not too sure how limber I am to brace my legs and pull the steering wheel - reckon I'll have to brush up on my yoga technique  but, hopefully, the contact cleaner might help and does seem the most painless.
All the helpful comments are much appreciated :D

I'm tempted to suggest persuading your yoga teacher that it is an excellent yoga technique for him/her to practice. Yes, ok, it may just seem like passing the buck, but why not?
Good luck (and avoid WD in this situation like the plague)!
