carb trouble help!

Post by trabant »

Ok so I picked up my series 2'two weeks ago on driving it home it became evident that something wasn't right any attempt to use a bit of power or when pulling up hill it had no go investigation showed it would rev so far then fart and pop and carry itself on the fibre washers on the bottom of the float bowl were weeping a fair bit so I ordered a seal kit.
Haven't replaced all the seals I'm still in the same trouble but its worse. Idles nicely rev it and it revs then goes flat and starts spitting back.however revving it and lifting the choke control at the same time improves this considerably I therefore assume its running really weak.

The jet and needle are original every washer and seal in the carb is new even with the mixture adjusting nut fully out its no better and seems like the idle mixtures fine but its suffering fuel starvation when a larger flow is required. The only other thing is the carb spindle bushes are rather worn but having run cars with SU carbs for years I find that usually more likely to cause trouble on idle .

I've timed it three times and it makes no odds of the air filter is on or not

screw the nut under the carb right in,then take it out twelve flats,(Basic adjustment) then trial in and out from that point. If no improvement drive it till it falters then switch off and coast to a stop,so that the pump is not working ,then take the top off the carb bowl and see if the fuel level is ok,this will show if it needs adjusting or if the pump if producing enough flow.

As above - the fuel level may be too low - or v restricted delivery from the fuel pump. Do a flow test into a container - should do a pint in two minutes.
