Heater wiring problem

Post by Tim M »

Hi,

I know that people have posted this before but I am still a tad lost as to where to connect the two wires from my Smiths round heater to my '54 Minor. One of the wires has a little button connector which I think I have placed in a green connection under the dash. (?).

The other is stripped back and I guess should be earthed, where should this one go please?

On SS6 in the manual it talks about connecting one lead to the A4 terminal and the other to the E terminal on the control box. If this is right, where are they talking about.

Only two wires to go .... :)

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Tim,

Yes the feed is from the A4 fuse (on when ignition is on) which is a green wire as you said. The other wire from the heater in connected to 'earth', which can be any clean connection on the body. You can run it back to the 'E' terminal on the control box, but probably simpler to make a connection nearer to the heater?

When you have made the connections, pull out the A4 fuse and check that the heater does not work!

Tim,

The one with a white wire at one end and green wires the other. The white wire comes from the ignition switch, and the green wires go off to feed accessories that are only on when the ignition is turned on, e.g. indicators, wiper motor, brake lights, heater etc.

We had issues on Steveys car with this. The heater and the wiper motor are connected and I cannot remeber exactly what way. There should be a black earth and a green power come out of the loom for you to attach these to.

Hhhhmmm. The good news is the heater now works fine! The bad news is the wipers don't. Any clues on this? :-?

Probably a wiring connection has been disturbed, maybe at the fuse box.

OK, I have found that one of the green wires feeding the connection into which the heater connector fits is flapping about loose. It has stripped wires but no connector. I blew a fuse trying to find one possible place and also tried to see if this needed to be earthed and now find that that the ignition light remains on even when the key is not in the car.

I've disconnected the battery but would really appreciate any ideas of how to proceed with this?

Many thanks,

Tim

Green wire is ignition fused supply - it definitely is NOT to be earthed ! Only Black wires go to earth. Have you connected the wire to a non-ignition supply? That would certainly bring on the Ign light..... You must ONLY EVER connect wires of the SAME colour together.... it's basic stuff really!

Thanks for this, I thought so. I cannot see where to connect the green wire to at the present, I will look again in the morning. The green wire is still flapping in the breeze.

All sorted now, I'd taken quite a few wires out of commission when pushing the heater tubes through. So now my little car has heat and windscreen wipers. Brilliant
