Starter Solenoid Wiring

Post by MacQuigley »

Im trying to re wire my starter solenoid but as far as I can see the supply to its coil, from the ignition switch should be via a white/red cable. I cant find a white /red cable anywhere in the vehicle.

Does anyone know if any other colours were used (my car is 1961/62 vintage)? All cables were marked when I disconnected them but sadly its been so long since I did that, all the writing has faded to the point where I can read only a very few.

Yes -white with red tracer. Find it at the Ign switch - and it will only be long enough to reach the solenoid anyway.... Test all possible wires with a test lamp/meter - while someone twists the key.

Decided to empty the car so I could get under the dash and found I don't have a white/red cable on the ignition switch just 2 white and one brown/blue.

Its been 18 years since I last drove this car and now I cant figure out how to start it! Do I not still need a supply to the starter solenoid in order to close the contacts to the starter motor? What am I missing?

Obviously your car doesn't have a starer solenoid! At least - not unless it has been added later with perhaps a push button start. Or does the car have a pull start? Show us a picture of the 'solenoid'

I think time is playing its tricks. I checked the key switch and it is only a 2 position so I cant have had a electrically operated solenoid. Think is its been so long now I cant remember what it did have. I need to do some more digging through the parts I have.

A 61 or 62 would have a pull start, the pull switch nearest the steering wheel and a solenoid like this under the dash

One half of the solenoid goes to the battery terminal along with a brown wire from the loomm the other half goes down to the starter motor!

Hope that makes sense, I can take a pic in the morning if you need it.

Had a wee look on Bull Motif's site earlier and found the same part. I cant say for sure but I think I have seen that part in one of he various bins I have parts stored in. My mind is definitely playing tricks. When I found two electrically operated solenoids I was sure one was from this car but like I say its been 17 or 18 years and I guess I was wrong. for sure this starter ties in with the few pics I took at the time.

The greatest asset in car restoration has to be the digital camera. When I stripped this I was still using film so I didn't take as many as I could or should have.

A pull start car does NOT have a 'solenoid' !!! Can we please put an end to this confusion ...? A solenoid is an electrically operated switch - by definition the switch on early cars is operated by 'pulling' a cable ... It is NOT a solenoid...
