Seat restoration surprise.

Post by chrisdebois »

The latest job in my convertible restoration, while she is away for a respray, is the interior. The car came with maroon seats which did clean up ok the first time, but yesterday I decided to really give them a proper clean. A nail brush and Cif seemed to do a reasonable job but there were some paint splashes here and there that I attempted to remove with no luck.

I then got a little paint thinner and tried cleaning the vinyl in an area that wasn't easily visible and was surprised to see a bright red coming through. I was a bit retiscent to continue over a bigger area but carried on until there was no turning back and within 10 minutes had these new looking Cherokee Red (I think) seats I can only think that at some point they had had a vinyl paint put on.

It was a bit of a shock because I love the maroon colour, but I think I can get used to the new bright red in time. In the photos below you can clearly see the original maroon.

They brightened up much more than I would have expected. Nice convertible. Please get a copy of the drivers handbook and study how to put the hood down. If you just fold everything together, the fabric will wear faster. The process includes pulling the fabric out away from the hood sticks and laying it flat on the boot, fold in the bottom corners, fold the fabric in half and then up over the sticks. Of course you do need a cover, but this is the only way an original cover will easily fit over the whole bundle.
