In desperation !

Post by 1098 »

New coil, points condenser, heat shield kit for bowl, new fuel pipe. Starts fine, cuts out after 10 mins. Leave for 15,starts fine again, then the same again. A slightly hotter engine bay than usual, from other Minors I have owned,or just my imagination perhaps ! Did a coast to coast run with it,it was spot on. Used it for a week to get to work, then the trouble began. Got stuck one night after a night shift, couldn't get it going. The AA towed me home, suggested I removed the electronic ignition, and went back to points/condenser. I did just that,it starts fine, and then after 10 mins,cough,splutter.... Any help appreciated ![frame]Image[/frame]

It's never the (good old) coil. If you have fitted a modern coil - well suspect ! But is it fuel or sparks? Check by pouring a little fuel down the carb next time this happens - if it fires up right away then it IS a fuel supply problem. Otherwise Ignition !

Check the output flow rate of the fuel pump - may not be delivering enough to keep up with the engine. :-?

Well, symptoms persist. Even took it to a local Auto electrician,to check my work. All Ok,doing everything it should in that department. So,replaced the carb. Bowl was completely empty,so plenty of ticking from the pump as it filled it up. Choke etc returning as it should. Same story,10 mins down the road, cough splutter. Stop and allow things to cool down and off we go again. But because it's already warm.I don't get too far. One thing I have noticed is the engine bay is quite hot,not over heating, but very hot. Thermostat out in the morning, and tighten the fan belt.

Looks like a fuel supply problem then; check the fuel filter on the pump is clean and that there are no obstructions in the fuel pipe.

An infrared thermometer is inexpensive and would definitely help determine how hot the engine is getting and if that's a reason for concern. (Check the cylinder head, above the thermostat and the top of the radiator, all should be around 85 C)

And when it stopped - did you immediately tip some fuel down the carb to see if it started? If you don't follow the suggestions there is no point in us bothering to try to help you....

My van starting rough today I checked plugs, plug leads changed points and condenser and still ran rough then did compression test and two cylinders no compression so 99% sure head gasket has gone. I'm going to get someone I know who is a mechanic to replace it for me :x

Replace the rotor Eddie, that was my problem a while back, similar symptoms. Just thought though, yours was playing up with the electronic ignition wasn't it, and I presume had no rotor arm? So maybe it's not that!

Still try the tip test.... May be something floating about in the jet causing a blockage? To clear that - when it runs - rev up and clamp your gloved hand over the carb inlet to clear away any crap. Hot rad and engine bay often indicates seriously retarded ignition - even been known to make exhaust manifold glow red...... Advance it till it kicks gently against the starter - then back slightly - and follow up with 'best idle and finally 'not quite pinking'. Is the vacuum advance working as it should?

Took petrol pump off, cleaned the points, they were slightly pitted,it's certainly working much much better. No cutting out now,but still coughing and spluttering under load, and when pushed harder almost ready to back fire. Fitted a NOS Crimped silencer last year,it's at least twenty plus years old. :-?
