What use would a strobe be ? You have no idea what setting your engine wants on the timing.....

Roy,

He checks it with the strobe before he fits the new dizzy and resets it to that setting after fitting the new.
Simples really for those who wish to use a strobe. :P

You can hear the tick over slow down as he turns the dizzy, not the optimal setting then.

Thanks for all the info,
on balance I think Im gonna fit a new distributor but leave it as points, I can mend it when out and about, thats what I like about Moggies!

In that case, I would recommend getting a set of points from 'Distributor Doctor' for your distributor. By simply fitting a set of these points in my car, I immediately noticed a smoother sounding engine. Also, the car pulls much better and petrol consumption has improved from 37mpg to 41 mpg :D
