What engine is it ?

Post by Woodyalan »

Trying to identify the engine in my 1970 Traveller. Should be a 1098 of course but the V5 says it's a 998 so it's probably had a transplant at some time. Can't make out the figures on the engine ID plate but on the lower nearside where the engine size is stamped the number 1200 is shown. It's the type where the tappet cover breather goes straight to the carb.

Is there a silver tag attached to the block near the front tappet cover?

Nope no silver tag just the number 1200 engraved on the block.

There was no '998' for a minor....and it's not a 1275 if it has a cam follower breather.... If it was a 948 there would be '950' cast in the block below the breather - so my guess is it's a 1098. Any chance of a pic of the engine - especially the spark plug side of the head?

Can't see how to send more than one pic at a time so more will follow. If it's a 1098 why would the number 1200 be cast on the block?

That looks like a manual fuel pump blanking plate, the last time I saw one of those was on a Morris Marina 1275 engine I had, though I'm sure others had it, I don't recall seeing one on a Minor engine.
Though, as always, I'm open to correction.......
I've lightened the picture, you can clearly see the 1200 on the block now. Also visible are the tappet chest covers, so not a 1275, as BMC has already pointed out.............
Best wishes,
Mike.

1952 Morris Minor MM highlight with sidevalve engine still fitted, wants work, so joins the queue for now......

Could it be an Austin engine? Wasn't there a 1200 engine fitted to one of the 'counties' models.

It certainly has a 1098 cylinder head (12G202) - and it is an A series engine.... The 1200 'A40 Devon' engine was a fore-runner of the A series (and B series) range of engines.... But that's not one of them!!

If it is a transplant the donor car could have been anything. Was there not an A series 998 fitted to something else?

Yes - many a Mini.... But never an inline option - although it is possible to 'make' one.

I had a 1098 with the mechanical fuel pump bolt on blank, so don't let that be a red herring
