Pull Switch Start

Post by mike.perry »

The pull knob starter switch appears to have given up, when I pull the starter knob - nothing. The starter motor works fine if I jump it direct from the battery.
Is the switch a servicable item or have I got to cough up £28 (Moss prices) for a new switch? The switch is only 53 years old

Try some WD40 in it....(may need to drill a wee hole). Does it work if you push the pin under the bonnet? And try the connections - maybe a dry joint..

Mike,

Using 'Morris Minor Starter Switch' on eBay brings up lots of items. The cheapest pull switch type is this:

£15.00 and free P&P - how long it will last is another matter!

It does not work if I push the pin, I just get a sore finger! I will try WD40.
I have a box in the garage with plenty of the electric starter switches but non of the old pull switch type
Thanks for the advice, now I just have to work my way through the tangle of wires to get to the back of the switch

Wooden hammer handle is good to use.

These do seem to fail after about 50 years.

Could equally be the starter motor, check that first per starter thread today, (battery disconected, and ign off ) I normally remove the battery feed to the switch (then re-connect battery . ign off) and hold it to the exit side to the starter motor (hold the insulation and care not to short to bodywork. If starter spins its either the switch or a problem on the ign wiring.

Starter motor is fine, I have started it with a jump lead direct from the battery.
Do not do this at home folks!

WD 40 did the trick, a quick spray around the switch and pushed the pin in with a spanner and it worked. Thanks Roy, you win the bonus prize, and others for your suggestions

A temporary reprive, the switch innards have fried, just have to bypass the input side of the switch with a cable directly from the battery to the output side of the switch. I have a Mini floor starter button, I wonder what I can do with that?

the mini floor starter, could be a good idea, use the vacant dash position for another function, and floor switch extra anti theft, bet theres not many toe rags who have ever heard of one, I'd forgotten and I used to have one :D just make sure its not close to the dip switch :o :o

Removed the broken switch and fitted a Mini floor switch. I won't say where but it takes me a while to find it.

I think that I have just about caught up with the backlog of jobs, starter switch replaced, disconnected main beam warning light wire reconnected, replaced broken glass on oil pressure gauge, fitted new dynamo with drive for rev counter. Just need to fit new seals to spare carb then fit to engine.

Fitted a "new" starter switch, got fed up with the traffic jams at the lights trying to find the push button when the ignition switch cut out
