FRONT HUBS
Hello I am repacking the front hubs with new grease,as part of a full restoration.What is the tightening torque on the nut.I have an older workshop manual,but nowhere can I find a figure Len

The list in the mechanical http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=51709 says 40 lb/ft but I would prefer to set them at 50 lb/ft.

As tight as you can reasonably get them with a breaker bar then slacken off to get the split pin in. Remember n/s bearing nut anti clockwise thread.

NO! They do not need to be particularly tight, certainly NOT a breaker bar!! There's - no point. Just pull them up sensibly with a normal hand tool then forward or slightly back to the nearest split pin hole. Do always use a new pin...

As lencot76 is asking for a torque reading I would suggest that he has a torque wrench.
If that is so and there is a torque reading given that is what should be used and not a estimate of torque if using other means to tighten the hub nut i.e. breaker bar/ring spanner.
Whilst the torque list in the technical section states 40 lb/ft (for Minor front hub nuts) the torque for MG Midget front hub nuts (for drum brakes) is given in the Haynes workshop manual (No: 265) as 55-65lb; and as they are basically the same hub I personally would set the hub nut to 50-55 lb/ft.

But many don't have a torque wrench - and 40 ft lbf is not a lot - easily do-able with a hand tool, and 'breaker bar' tight is just crazy. Viz a recent post involving stripped threads in an attempt to remove play in the bearings... The split pin holds the nut firmly - it doesn't need to be all that tight. 40 ft lbf is less than a head nut torque - and that's a MUCH smaller thread!!! So it's not intended to be anywhere near the yield of the threads!!

Thanks for the answers I do have a torque wrench,but nowhere in my older workshop manual,could I find a setting.I have now set them tp 50 ft lbs Len
