Unbranded/labelled alternator

Post by nwxh »

I have an alternator fitted by a notable but anonymous Morris Minor specialist. I took it out during a strip down and found the plastic cover to be damaged. Any idea which brand it is and how to get one. Also any idea what the wiring arrangements are? Two pins are connected, which are presumably two + terminals for convenience and the other the "Ind"?[frame]Image[/frame]

Your location may give a clue?

It looks like one of the ubiquitous Lucas ACR range alternators. Do you have a picture of the connections? If there are 2 + terminals and an 'Ind', that is the standard -ve earth ACR connection arrangement. One or both of the + terminals goes directly to the starter solenoid, or starter pull switch on earlier Minors. The 'Ind' goes to the ignition warning lamp.

Has it been connected to the car before, and was it working? If you are fitting it to a dynamo car, there is more to do than just the connections above.

This is the basic Lucas ACR connections diagram - the second 'dotted line' lead from the alternator to the starter solenoid is for the higher output versions (ACR 20 and above).

Many thanks and good detective skills! Do you know where to get a spare plastic plate for this alternator range?

Nothing is labelled including the terminals, so I'm using "Ind" since labelled alternators have this. I didn't bother uploading the picture of the terminals but I confirmed that two out of three are connected to each other. It was previously working and only removed from the engine before taking it out, but I didn't check the wiring before pulling it out thinking it'd be labelled.

(In the end I didn't get the engine out due to a bolt I couldn't remove.)

Some 'Lucas ACR' covers on eBay - try searching in 'Vehicle Parts & Accessories' for 'ACR cover'. There are different shapes shown, so it looks like a visual match will be required!

The connectors are different sizes - can't go wrong really. Can you not just repair the cover with an 'invisible' patch inside? What 'bolt' won't come off ??

Different size spades? Bigger size is the one that takes all the current? Makes sense, cheers.

I could use duct tape I guess. I can't remove the bracket on the LHS of the car i.e. from the engine bay floor. One of the bolts seems impossible to grab tightly on the base of the car.

The engine mounting bracket at the front of the engine on the left hand side of the car.
