Gearbox input shaft
I have my ribbed gearbox out of the car because of an oil leak from the front, I am going to replace the front cover with the new version with the oil seal, however, the input shaft has play in it. How much movement should there be if I move it from side to side. Hope I don't have to replace that bearing.

Re: Gearbox input shaft
Any shaft supported by a bearing only at one end is going to waggle, the amount permissible is a matter of judgement, perhaps an overall movement of half an inch would be ok. Not easy without seeing! When the other end is in the crankshaft of course, it will get more support.
Re: Gearbox input shaft
It would be worthwhile changing the bearing - and check the bush in the crank tail is present and correct. Are these seal kits any good? It really shouldn't be necessary.... Bit like putting a bandage on a broken leg.....fix the problem, not the symptom...

Re: Gearbox input shaft
Thanks les, its a lot less than 1/2 inch more like 0.1 inch. bmc I just thought having a proper oil seal would be better than not having one or am I missing something.
Re: Gearbox input shaft
Well bmc I have done what you suggested and changed the bearings plus a new lay-shaft and bearings and re-assembled using the pdf which is available. All has gone well and all gears appear to function as they should, however, on occasions the input shaft is stiff to turn and I have located the cause to the 3rd and 4th baulk rings occasionally binding in the synchronizer assembly. Is this usual and has anyone else had this problem?
Re: Gearbox input shaft
Well done - it's just because the box is dry - coat well in oil and I'm sure it will be fine when in the car and filled with oil.
