What oil for dampers

Post by OGY985K »

Hi All,
What do you recommend for topping up dampers? I've used hydraulic jack oil (very thin) but it appears to be leaking through. The dampers have done less than 10K since replacement with re-furbished items. Thanks

SAE 40 seems to be recommended. Lots of recent discussion on this, you may find it helpful to do a search.

Jack oil is even thinner than the original SAE 20 oil. I use SAE 40 or even SAE 50, and the damping is much improved. Don't just 'top up' - drain and refill with the heavier oil. But it will probably still leak - complain to whoever did the 'reconditioning' - which I suspect involves cleaning and refilling with new oil only....
