Banging sound whilst braking

Post by GHWells »

Ever since I have had my Morris (about 18 months) I have experienced a loud banging/flapping sound when breaking heavily. It doesn't occur when using the pedal lightly, and doesn't occur at lower speeds. When breaking from speed then it gets louder the harder I push the pedal, and the speed of the banging/flapping seems to relate to the speed of the wheel. Almost sounds like the wing is flapping. I have been replaced my brake shoes all round and the problem still exists. It sounds to me like it is coming from the offside front wheel but I cannot see what is causing it.
Can't get fast enough in reverse to see if it happens then. It doesn't appear to have got worse over the 18 months, but I would like to get rid of it. Any help gratefully received!

What parts of the car are you breaking (sic) ??? As above - look to the front suspension bushes - replace them all with polyurethane bushes - much firmer and last 'for ever'. How on earth did the car get an MOT with this 'banging' going on ???

Thanks for all the advice - apologies for the typo! Will try swapping drums to start and see if the banging swaps sides, if not will check the bushes. Ta

Had this happen, in my case it was the arm from the damper that had come loose, and the whole assembly was banging on the inner wing when braking.
Check if there's evidence of contact between the inner wing and top suspension mount; if there is you'll need to refurbish or replace the damper.
