Brake lights / indicator - fuse keeps blowing!

Post by mattinhertford »

Hi all,

I've set aside some diagnostic time this weekend to look into this but thought I'd drop a note on here incase this is something people have experienced before and could point me in the right direction.

Basically the fuse for the brake lights/indicators keeps blowing. I think also the brake light switch may be faulty, although I'm sure it was fine until recently, so I think that is after the fuse problem, not the cause of it.

I had it all working last weekend, ready for the MOT next weekend, and I tried it all last night and found the fuse blown, and the brake light switch appears to be permanently 'on' i.e. no resistance across the points even when peddle is NOT pushed down

Ref the fuse, is it likely to be poor wiring somewhere i.e. worn insulation meaning wires touching parts they shouldn't be?...in which case is it literally look along the length of every wire involved in this circuit i.e. front indicator unit at front working backwards?

Could it be some sort of overload i.e. seems like it only blows when the side/main lights are on and the brakes being operated at the same time?....in which case what am I looking for?

Any pointers gratefully received.

Thanks

Matt

The side/main lights don't go through that fuse. So unlikely to be connected. Are they 35 amp fuses? Find out why the brake lights are ON - I assume they go out when you pull a wire off ? Then investigate - does the fuse blow if indicators are used - check both sides and let them run for a minute or so each side. The wipers and heater also run through that fuse- do they work ok ?
