A working van.. payload problems

Post by lucyjeanes »

Hi all,

I am hoping to use my moggy van for my catering business, but am mindful to be within the limits of the law. As a '71 I think the payload its 8cwt (400kg), does anyone know how I would find out for sure?

If I needed to increase the payload, would anyone know how I would go about doing this ?

Many thanks for comments and suggestions in advance :)

I believe 8cwt is right. If you need to haul more a small trailer might be the simplest option.

After 1968 there was the option to purchase an uprated 8cwt version. The standard van was only rated at 6cwt however. The specification of your van would have been stamped into the identity plate on the inside of passenger door when it was new. The 8cwt version had uprated suspension parts, stronger steering arms and wider wheels. The vans used by the Post Office were always standard 6cwt versions.

I agree with this, and judging by the photo on the restoration projects section it is definitely a 6CWT. It's very nice original example of a Telephones van even down to the ladder rack and number plates and I'd say a good buy. Does the V5 registration document confirm the payload at all?

That's very interesting. When I started work with the Coal Board ( early 70's) they were still using some Minor vans that were all 8cwt. Maybe uprated to get another couple of sacks in the back?

I think Steve is right about 8cwt .There is a box in different sizes that fits on a towbar that may help
