Speedometer drive from gearbox

Post by birdbrainbrewery »

Hi, the speedo cable has broken off in the pinion drive on the gearbox. Is it possible to remove the plastic nut and remove the pinion drive without removing the gearbox? Then is it possible to replace it with a new or second hand unit if I can not get the old section out?
The car is a Morris Minor 948cc year 1960

Yes- should be - not much access, but do-able.

Have you tried getting the broken cable out with a pair of pliers?
If you have not got safe access under the car then you may have to remove the gearbox floor pan. Why did the cable break?

Speedo cable broke because the garage chap had worked on the carb and moved the cable out of his way but it was not in a position to rotate correctly!
I have tried with a pier of plyers but not very much sticking out to get hold off. Have some ramps coming so will try again or take the unit out after drain the gearbox oil out.

Would a small strong magnet encourage it out, or magnetise a small rod and see if it will draw it out.
