Traveller Bodywork

Post by alawrence »

I'm looking to build a Traveller and want to start with a rust free base and bodywork.
I don't have facilities to do welding or paint but I want it completely rust free
All other work and upgrades I will carry out myself but the thought of doing all this on top of a poorly prepared base would drive me mad...
What's the best route to go ?

All you can hope to do then is phone round the usual suspects and ask if they have a suitable bodyshell they would be prepared to sell you.... Seems unlikely to me, but if you don't ask......you don't get....

The "usual suspects" are all the traders who advertise in Minor Matters Some like David Manners and Bull Motif are pure parts suppliers, but many of the others are either restorers or have workshops attached. someone might be prepared to weld the metal for you, but no promises - there is plenty of demand for fully finished vehicles. Depending on your space and facilities, you could buy any wreck and then strip it and get a mobile welder to come and work to your requirements.

I don't have the skills for welding to the standard I want unfortunately
I think the best route for me is get traveller with poor wood but the best chassis I can find
I will strip it and get A N Other to shot blast and weld it up where appropriate and spray it with some sort of undercoat
I will then fit the recon mechanicals an new panels
I can then strip it for spraying
Sounds easy if I say it quickly...

I reckon if the timber has gone, you can be sure the chassis will be even worse..... I do think in the circs you should just buy the best running Trav you can afford, and then improve it as a 'running restoration'.
