Ignition light not working - alternator

Post by 814XUW »

Hello all,
Wondering if anyone can help with an inconvenience on my car.
The wiring has been significantly bodged so I've had to start again. Some owner had the warning light running through the oil pressure warning light wire, to show the extent of the bodge.
So I've started again and run new wiring from the correct terminal on the ignition switch to the warning lamp, and then a new wire from the lamp to the alternator loom (from ESM).
The bulb works, and if I connect the warning lamp wire to earth and turn on the ignition the light shines. But the bulb never comes on at all, not when ignition is first turned on or anything.
The alternator is charging the battery (sits at approx 13 volts idle goes up to 14 volts with revs) so I'm a little perplexed by this issue.
Any help gratefully received.

Yes - most alternators will work fine without the warning light. There must be a fault in the alternator if it is all wired as you describe. But if it keeps charging.....no worries!

Problem solved.
Before the loom was made up of (poorly) crimped single lucar terminals. I took these off to fit the connector block but the warning light terminal on the alternator must have got slightly bent and was sitting out of place.
Only noticed as I went to clean the terminals as a final attempt with some fine sandpaper, and there it was, staring me in the face!
