Re: type 3 gearbox?
Can I ask why you are wanting to fit the type 3 gearbox? you will end up with a four speed box.. the advantage of the type 9 is that it is 5 speed box, the conversion will not be cheap but is worth it to get the fifth gear..( over to you Roy to rubbish even fitting the type 9 box )

Re: type 3 gearbox?
i dont do tonnes of fast speeds mostly 40-50, i intend to fit a 4 speed box either type E 'rocket' or type 3 if it works with the fitting kit, i know the type e is a tougher box im only asking cos a guy near me has 2 type 3's for sale.

Re: type 3 gearbox?
if all you are doing is 40 -50 then stick with a moggy box would be my advice ( for what it is worth ).. i doubt even a rebuilt moggy box would cost the same as a fitting kit for the type 9

Re: type 3 gearbox?
well i mean i usually do 40-50 in my everyday travels but id like to get to that speed faster haha, got a 1300 running at the moment but plan to change cam, carb and head to give a little more, hence id like a stronger box and axle

Re: type 3 gearbox?
There is nothing wrong with fitting a 4 speed gearbox to a Minor and in fact the Ford 2000E 4 speed was the original Ford to Minor gearbox conversion and was supplied by C.S. Auto Classics (CSAC) at Wells as part of their Series 3 and later Series 4 Morris Minor upgrade and was originally in partnership with Charles Ware.
I drove one of the very early CSAC conversions fitted with the 2000E 4 speed gearbox and was so impressed that I fitted the 4 speed to my Minor and it is still fitted though over time it has metamorphosed with Quaife parts into a SC/CR, alloy cased box with Quaife Q/S and was a pleasure to drive in standard trim and now even better in Quaife format.
The 4 speed is a good gearbox, tough, has the bonus of synchro on 1st gear and is a lot lot cheaper than a 5 speed.
The gearbox must be one that has a detachable bell housing so the adapter bell housing can be fitted.
This is the type of Ford 4 speed gearbox you require if you decide to fit the 4 speed. Just scroll down for the details and note the price

The 5 speed is only a 4 speed with the 5th gear grafted onto the rear end of the gearbox http://www.type9gearbox.co.uk/type-9-history.html

Re: type 3 gearbox?
right then! ive managed to nab myself a type E box, bloody few and far between these days it seems. now, few questions, the first motion shaft on the gearbox, im betting it wont fit into the bearing on my crankshaft (marina 1275) so, do i need to get it ground down, or do i replace the bearing inside the crank with another? ill get myself a fitting kit sooner or later, im assuming the crossmember for the type 9 will fit the type E? i do have the original crossmember mounting that came with the gearbox if that can be modded.

Re: type 3 gearbox?
As regards the Ford first motion shaft CS Autoclassics provided a suitable phosphor bronze bush for the rear of the crankshaft.
I amended that to provide a needle roller bearing to support the Ford 1st motion shaft - see photo.
As regards the cross member I use the standard Morris Minor 1000 one with the Minor gearbox mountings removed, a Minor rear spring pad fitted inside and a rear damper link bush to line the cross member hole. I did drop the cross member by 1/2" by inserting spacers between cross member and body/chassis rail.
I had to make a new gear box cover but that was made using the original gearbox cover lower half and an additional top part let in.[frame]

I had to also let in a section around the gear lever to allow use of the Ford circular rubber gear leaver gaiter.
I have a quick shift gear lever suitable for your gearbox if you are interested (see picture).[frame]
