Paint by Valspar

Couldnt get any Frilford Grey so I took a piece of card with the remains of the previous spray that I had managed to get. This paint had stood out darker on the car as the origainal paint had faded.
I took the sample to B&Q, the new Valspar paint mixing section.
They scanned it, and at my request lightenned it by 20% 1 ltr of exterior wood and metal (15 year anti mould guarentee ) and its perfect, just the right colour, only problem is having to brush paint but I am working on the idea that after a couple of coats I can T cut it back to smooth, will let you know if that plan worked!!

you might T cut after about 3 years when it eventually gets hard enough

It is perfectly possible to obtain Frilford Grey car paint (or any other colour come to that) in both cellulose and 2 pack through specialist suppliers. I have bought some within the last few months myself and it is an excellent match.

As kennatt says oil based paint will take forever to harden enough to flat.Its best used to paint your house.Any half decent autopaint factor will mix you the proper stuff and match the colour spot on.

Frilford Grey isn't a common Minor colour and I wouldn't expect a company like Bull Motif or ESM to stock it. I got mine delivered the following day from a company specializing in cellulose car paints.

Don't use house paint -you'll never get a good finish. B&Q paint is meant for houses not vehicles.

Years gone by all vehicles were brush painted. I painted a Morris 8 E by hand with coach enamel and a lovely job it was too. Biggest problem was keeping dust and flies off as it dried. Wet the floor and keep the garage doors tight shut.....

I used it for the engine bay, boot sections and other places that need protecting but are not on show, so I could save my last can for the bodywork.
I paint my boat topsides by hand, flatting off with a dryer brush, I can get a good shine but I dont think I would do the whole of my car, just little bits.

Have you looked into using a roller to get a smoother finish? You can get a very good finish brushing though. That is how my van is painted and with B&Q paint as well.

I managed to get some paint mixed, and sprayed, then I used a clear gloss laquer, next step to use wet and dry 2500 to bring up a shine, I will post some pictures of her at the wedding with her ribbons on.

I've got (published) pictures somewhere of the paint being applied to bullnose Morris bodies in the factory. They were sprayed...

However most coachbuilders and repairers brushed

Its easy to get sidetracked with old methods of working(don't get me wrong I'm full of admiration of what was achieved with the tools and resources available at the time).If the technology,tools and materials we use today had been available then they would have been used.
