Hello. New member with a Minor Tourer to restore.

Hi, here is my newly bought Tourer for light (hopefully) restoration. She ain't too pretty right now (shabby chic?) but she is very strong underneath, tight and responsive to drive and has passed her last 4 mots without advisories. This is my first restoration so I'm sure I will be pestering everyone for advice very soon. Chris.

Well, I have already started on the bodywork but today the gearbox broke, losing all gears but 2nd - although I luckily managed to limp her home and park up. I was thinking of just getting a recon box, but then thought maybe I could take it to my mechanic who I thoroughly trust to be able to do this for me. Can anyone recommend a link to somewhere I can get the parts for a full rebuild.

But before you start stripping it check the obvious things like oil level and clutch adjustment.

Thank you, I well take a look at the links. I'm sure it's very broken though, I heard the sound of thousands of pieces of metal hitting the ground just before I lost the gears.

Hi - another job to tackle with the Tourer's light restoration. The nearside wing is fibreglass and catches on the door half way up scratching and removing paint. I can't adjust the door away from the wing because the tight fit on the opposite side of the door/b pillar won't allow this. I'm thinking of getting a pattern steel wing and wondered how good a replacement these were - or whether they are a bit of a gamble.

If you're interested in a good quality product and good panel gaps I'd say forget them. I have pattern wings on one of our cars and Heritage wings on the other. There is a big difference in the quality but of course the Heritage ones are twice the price and you get what you pay for in this instance. Can your fibreglass one not be adjusted for a better fit?

As above I'd modify the fibreglass wing. I have a repro wing on the drivers side and original on the passenger side and the difference is noticeable (leaving aside the flippin visible join line as my repro is 2 pieces). Shame whoever fitted it didn't shape it correctly before spraying the car as the wing to bonnet gap is all over the place.

Thank you. Yes, I will have a look over the next couple of days to see if there is any movement possible with the wing (probably need just 2 mm) I wonder why it isn't possible for the manufacturers to get the pattern parts exact?

My Tourer restoration has been continuing with the help and advice from members of the forum - thank you. I pulled a dent out of one wing and filled and sanded it; loads of wet and dry preparation; some electrical wiring restoration; new front panel and refurbished grille; waxoyling in every nook and cranny; interior pretty much out and all chromework off the car. I'm getting close to taking her off the road and getting everything stripped for a respray now. Original Old English White with the maroon roof of course!

I've been absolutely amazed by the reaction it gets from everybody - the car makes loads of people smile and you get nothing but positive comments. Really enjoying doing the work at the moment but I'm really looking forward to putting the shiny bits on after the paint has gone on.

Well, we took the Moggie (as yet unnamed) on her first proper long run this afternoon to test my competence at bolting things back on tightly after the resto. I'm pleased to say that, despite one speed hump scare when I was convinced something significent had liberated itself from the car, I counted four wheels and two Border collies on arrival at our destination. I shall consider this a great success.[frame][/frame]
