New Wiring Loom for Alternator, blowing main fuse

Post by Mark Wright »

I am restoring my car from ground up and have got to the point of fitting the wiring loom, its a Bull Motif Loom made for an Alternator. The loom came with no wiring diagram! I have connected all the wiring into the car using the wiring diagram in the Haynes Manual, with the amendments for the alternator fitting the 2 brown wires to the battery side of the solenoid, the white and red in the middle and the thick black to the starter. I am pretty sure this is correct?
My issue is at the fusebox, the loom has 3 whites and 3 greens on one side and 2 purple and 2 browns on the other, i've gone to connect the battery (neg earth now) and the 35amp fuse between the purple and browns has blown and the battery lead is fusing to the battery for the millisecond before it blows. I've tried disconnecting the horn as they are on the purple circuit, but still same issue.
I've obviously wired something wrong somewhere, and I'm somewhat concerned the fuse is blowing so violently, but without a wiring diagram for the loom I'm at a bit of a loss to understand where I've gone wrong?
I would be grateful for any advise?
thanks
Mark

The black wire i refers to is the thick black cable from the solenoid switch to the starter motor, and thats shown on the wiring diagram. the wiring diagram also shows an earth to the starter motor which i presume is through the engine earth and not a seperate earth?
So still non the wiser here!

Try taking both lines out of the fusebox (ie your two purple wires and then connecting one at a time and seeing which one blows. From there you at least know which side of the circuit is blowing.
The purples are for horn and interior light, so it's possible one of the 4 way connectors in the dashboard for the interior light may have got mixed up.

After this afternoon in the garage I have moved on somewhat; it was the interior lights wired wrong that was blowing the fuse, now the interior light works and turns off when you push in the door closure switch, I presume you should be able to over-ride the door control switch on the interior light itself, can't do that yet so a wire must be still incorrect? Any ideas?

Got the lights working, indicators, fuel pump clicking like mad - (disconnected as no petrol yet) car turns over on the key or pushing the solenoid switch underneath.

The indicator warning light is not working though, I took the small bulb out and formed a circuit with a battery and it came on faintly so the bulb is OK so that looks like something to do with the indicator switch - I've taken the cover off its a bit caked up in dust etc, but it looks quite complex - can it be taken off the car to clean?

2 other issues - the horn sounds all the time - it didn't at first until I pushed the horn push a few times now it won't go off - so again i suspect the switch on the steering column ?

Nothing at the wiper motor yet although its wired to the switch?.

Overall though I'm getting there with it

Whets the general view over the column switch for the horn / indicators, are they prone to failure or is cleaning the way forward?

The wiper switch earths the wipers. Whilst you are rewiring why not fit electric washers using a light switch in place of the wiper switch. See recent topic Horn and washer bottle not working

It is up to you to identify the correct wiring diagram for your car in the Workshop Manual and specify that diagram when ordering.
When you get the loom lay it out on the floor and identify all the connections. Keep the old loom, you may need a length of green/white in future
