We don't yet know for sure what size the journals are - could be false economy!

Thanks all for your input, it is valued.
I've rechecked today and got similar values (most the same, 3 within .01 of a mm which is just natural error I guess). Did take pics but looking at them at home they were in direct sunlight and aren't clear at all.
I fully conceded now that this crank is not ideal, and that it could well be oval etc, so I've given my friend an ultimatum of sorts, in that he can have this one (as what is effectively a short term fix that may well last a long time), or get it reground, or get an exchange item from ESM Minor spares. Given he'd have to get all new bearings anyway, a 'new' crank is looking likely.
