Can anyone tell me the easiest way to remove the old wheel nut studs from the hubs please. A while ago I had a rear hub off to change the bearing and seal and had a go at removing the studs from it while it was off. I put the nut on the thread till just before the thread showed then holding it on a socket on the vice belted it a couple on times. It did not move and at the time did not want to damage it as I had to use the car the next day. However when putting the wheel back on the front the other day I found one of the nuts wanted to keep spinning so I think it's time to change the lot for new ones. I have got them in stock along with nuts so I just need to know the best way of getting the old ones off now.
Many thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's the thread on the stud that's gone and not the thread on the wheel nut? They tend to strip first, and it won't like being whacked on the stud either.
Easy enough to test another nut on the suspect stud first.

Re: Best way to remove wheel studs?.
Not only the possibility of damaging the bearing but also the wheel/drum flange. Whilst it may seem substantial it will bend.
It is always better to remove the hub off the axle or stub axle before using a press or hammer to knock the old stud out.
I use a 9/16" socket with part of the side cut off (see photo below, the cut out allows the socket to sit correctly on the back of the hub). Place the socket on a firm surface i.e. a vice or anvil, place the head of the stud inside the socket and give the stud a smart wack and the stud will come free.
Works every time for me and removes the possibility of distorting the wheel/drum flange.
As above it is normally the threads in the wheel nut that fail before the stud.
To knock the stud fully home place the flange on a vice with the stud between the loose/open jaws (just a bit wider than the dia of the stud) and give the head of the stud a good wack to set the stud fully home or if using a hydraulic press facility press fully home.[frame]

Re: Best way to remove wheel studs?.
Hi Chesney, it is the nut thread that has gone but when I put a new nut on the stud it is a tight fit and in a short period of time it will strip the thread on the nut again.
Philthehill, I think your idea is the one to go for. I did try with a removed hub and using a socket but obviously I did not use enough force, time to get hard I think.
Thanks for your replies.

Yes I have and it is grabbing the thread all the way unfortunately.
