Old fashioned paper driving licences.

Just heard they become obsolete in June. Is that right? DVLA haven't contacted us about it.

I think it's the paper half of the modern licence. I hope it is as I've still got the old paper one, not had any reason to change it.

Be aware though that with a paper driving licence you will no longer be able to hire a car abroad without a code to check your driving records, again the details are on the above page a bit further down.

Thanks for the link, I wasn't aware of this either.
Also I haven't heard anyone mentioning it, so I wonder how many other people out there are unaware.
Of course it may be that keeping people in the dark .....

.............. well, they've already simplified their telephone answering service - by not actually employing anyone (human) to answer them!!!

My understanding and I am happy to be corrected if not right is that the paper half of the current photo licence is to become obsolete and the code is so that the vehicle hirer etc. can see what endorsements etc. the prospective hirer has.

If you still have a paper licence and not the photo licence all endorsements etc. are recorded on the paper licence so the vehicle hirer will look at your paper licence and should have no need to ring DVLA.
The paper licence is still valid until a change of address/change of name or the licence holder reaches the age of 70 where they have to declare that they are fit to drive and a photo licence automatically replaces the paper copy.
I also understand that DVLA can order the change of paper licence to photo licence under certain circumstances.

My old RED driving licence had an additional page stuck inside (printed in Italian) so that when I drove in Italy and was stopped by the Italian Police they could see if my driving licence was legal or not.
Always baffled the local UK police though

I just looked on the DVLA site and its paper part of the photo card licence and if you got your licence before 1998 its alright.
