Rear hub oil seal

Post by janstolp »

The rear hub oil seal from my Van is sweating a bit.
No problem I thought so I took a new seal but it is simply not possible to fit it in the hub.
The inner diameter of the hub is 59,7 mm and the outer diameter of the "standerd"oil seal is 63,4 mm. :o
I have another rear axle but it has exactly the same problem. That axle also came from a Van.
My Van was built in 1968.
I asked a few very experienced Morris members here in The Netherlands but they didn't know this rarety.
Does anyone over here has any knowledge of this and moreover does any one know where I can get a new oilseal for this type of axle?

I have just checked the I.D. of the seal seat of two spare Minor rear axle hubs and they are both 63.4mm I.D. :-?
I have attached the ESM van pick up supplement and there does not appear to be a reference to a different oil seal being fitted to that fitted to a Minor car Pt No: GHS 147 (MOSS)

http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/imagesea ... lement.pdf

Somewhere in the back of my memory I seen to recount that a larger wheel PCD (possibly 4.5") was fitted to the larger capacity vans but I could be wrong. If the PCD was different the hub seal may be different!
Is it possible to fit Ser 2 hubs to a later axle as the hub seal Pt No: SV111 (ESM) appears to be of a smaller O.D.
Anyway a mystery that no doubt someone on here will solve.

Thank your for the reply.
To the knowledge of those "in the know" even the large capacity Vans had the same rear axle.
They even used the same one for the 1500 Wolseley.
I find it very strange that I have two of those axles :-?

I agree with the axle casing being the same as fitted to Minor, Wolsey 1500 and Riley 1.5 but still not sure about the hubs fitted to the larger capacity vans though.

What's also odd that I can use the "normal"O-ring and paper gasket.....

The problem is...the outer ring of the old seal is STILL IN THERE!! Fish it out....then the new seal will fit......... :D

That must be the answer because after a lot of fiddeling I removed rubber but no steel !! :D
But how on earth do I remove the steel ring without damaging the hub.
Do you know a trick or do I have to put it on a lathe to carefully remove the steel. :o
Thank you very much for your reactions!

Jan

All the time I knew there was a steel ring inside the rubber but as I wrote I didn't remove any steel from the old oilseal......
Well you can't win them all and luckely enough there are people around here that can make you open your eyes!

You just have to dig it out.... You won't easily damage the hub. Just go at it sensibly!

I think this might pertain to my problems today!

I have removed the hub, banged out the bearing, and dug out chunks of the old seal.

But there now seems to be a thin band of metal in the well where the new seal would go.

Reading above it seems to indicate that there is a metal band that also needs to be removed, *but* there is no metal band on the new one! (there is a metal spring type ring that fits inside the seal - I've already removed that from the hub...)

Should I dig out this metal band, or would i actually be digging holes in the hub if i did that???

Thanks for looking!

It needs to come out and there will be nice shiny hub metal behind it. The new seal is probably encased in black rubber so you wont actually see the metal part on the seal.

Absolutely! When I got home I looked at the new seal and its very rigid, so metal band inside it.

I got the old one out with a chisel, hammer and a couple of minor scratches *ulp*

All Minors have scratches  Just make sure there are no sharp edges where the marks are when you fit the new seal - and the right way round of course :)

All in! I managed to strip a road nut though, first one in over 25 years

Seal went in the way the old one came out, flat bit toward the car.

Getting the bearing back in was an interesting experience, my ears were hurting, and I think I need a bigger hammer.

Thanks for confirming the setup.

That's not correct then it should not be tight in the hub.

It makes sense that you had to work hard to get the bearing in, the old one was tight coming out. It should not be loose in the hub. If so, the hub is worn and other problems can then arise.
Have a look at http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f= ... 33&start=0.

I agree not loose _ but certainly not hammer tight either.
