Testing fuel pump

Post by 67-2door »

Hi all.
I've just picked up an original SU fuel pump, obviously before fitting it or putting it in the boot for a spare I want to test it.
I touched the base to one battery terminal and the stud at the top to the other (with a length of wire) and it just gives one click. Is that correct or should it be ticking away furiously?
I've not tried checking/cleaning the points yet, I guess that'd be a good thing to start with.
Thanks.
Neil.

It needs to tick furiously...so you need to follow the Workshop Manual for cleaning and re-setting the points. The test of course is to get it to pump a couple of pints of fuel into a jug. Then run it on the car - and carry the 'known good' pump you take off the car as your spare!
