oil filter pressure plate.
Hi all.
just done a bit of routine maintenance, replaced rockers with new ones oil change etc.
After the oil change Ive poured the old oil away and found an extra bit which I missed on reassembly, I've had a look online and apparently it's the oil filter pressure plate that fits under the element.
will this be OK to leave off til next oil change or should I get my hands dirty again?
Thanks for any advice.
Paul.

Hi Paul, I would get your hands dirty again! Without the plate the oil isnt filtered properly.
Im just about to go out to change the gasket on the filter housing to the block thats leaking, so yo have my sympathies

Too many Minors so little time.....
Re: oil filter pressure plate.
The plate is ESSENTIAL - with a spring and a washer underneath - are they still present ? Fitting new rockers was a bit unusual - normally the shaft wears - did you fit a complete new assembly? And - more worryingly - did you disturb the cylinder head nuts to do so ????

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Thanks, will get dirty in the morning.
Will have a sift through my pan and make sure the spring and washer is in the as well.
and yes the rockers where very badly worn, strangely though the shaft wasn't too bad, I had a spare full set knocking about so I whipped the head off and gave that a good clean.
Gave it a quick start and wow what a difference, much quieter top end and a great exhaust note, looking forward to getting her out tomorrow to see what she drives like ( after I've put the oil filter together properly)
I'll post a picture of the worn rockers as well as I'd like some thoughts on what caused it.
Cheers,
Paul.

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Well done taking the head off. Lack of good oil flow is what causes it! So - have look inside the rocker cover to see if there is a good flow of oil at all the rockers. You should really re-torque the head anyway - after the first heat cycle - and then reset the valve gaps again.

I looked inside the rocker cover a few days ago and it did look pretty dry but after a little jaunt to the ace cafe things seemed to be good and wet again.
What would be causing bad oil flow? please don't say the oil pump is dying :/

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Oil pressure and oil flow are two different things thankfully.
The first thing you need to do is determine what oil pressure your engine has - and if that is ok it must be lack of oil flow.
It may get better with use as the crud gets dislodged and is captured by the oil filter. You could always use a detergent flushing oil to help things along.

Ok, great.
I didn't get a chance to do it today as it absolutely belted down with rain, so hopefully ill get a look at it tomorrow.
The guy who had it before me wasn't exactly bothered about oil changes etc so hopefully, it just needs a few good flushes.
Other than that she runs great with good even compression.

While I think of it.
what's the valve sequence? I did find it on here a while ago but it's escaped me.
I set them all to 0.012 but would like to open the exhaust valve gaps to 0.015
EEIE???
Thanks again.

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Yes - the exhausts should be 15 thou for unleaded fuel. Valves 1 4 5 8 are the exhausts!

Thank you.
Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Sorted!
The spring was still in the filter housing so all put back together properly now.
only had one minor catastrophe....I missed the old gasket and put a new one on top...wife not happy now as I don't think the drive will ever be the same again from the oil slick
Thanks for the advice peeps.

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
That's the other common error - you either leave the old one in and use it again (and 9 out of 10 it's fine) - or you hook it out and fit a new ring - sticking it in with a bit of grease....

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Will definately stick it in with grease next time, cheers.
I nipped the head down again and redid the valve.clearances, started her up to see if I could see what you where saying about oil flow, to me it doesn't look great only weeping out from no1 and no8 rockers, but I've nothing to compare it to so don't know how much should be flowing out.

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
bit of cement dust will clean up the drive , or cat litter works as well

Re: oil filter pressure plate.
Well -at least it's showing at both ends of the rocker shaft - so it should be ok.
