Positive earth minor
Hello guys and gals, as per the title I'm asking for a bit of advice on my '56 minor. It's currently running positive earth and I'm finding the Dynamo proper frustrating at night times. I'm looking at getting an alternator kit. I've asked a few people about fitting, few say I still need to change polarity by zapping the Dynamo and swapping wires around, whilst others say I just need to swap wires? Can anyone help??

Re: Positive earth minor
Here is the guide to changing it over but if you are just replacing the Dynamo with an Alternator you should only need to swop the battery terminals around and the coil connections.

Re: Positive earth minor
But your dynamo should easily handle a standard car electrics.....is the drive belt tight enough ?

Re: Positive earth minor
I'm not the best mechanic so it could be... should it be tight or maybe a little slack?
Re: Positive earth minor
Tight - but not 'bow' tight. It also may be 'ancient' - I would try a nice new belt.

Re: Positive earth minor
the Dynamo problem turned out to be dirt between the contacts? Didn't think it would cause charging issues... Thanks for your help guys, will let you know how the alternator turns out!
Re: Positive earth minor
Be sure to change the polarity of the car to -ve earth before attempting to fit an alternator......

Re: Positive earth minor
Is that just a case of turning the battery around and changing the coil wires?
Re: Positive earth minor
And cleaning/resetting the points in dizzy and fuel pump - and reversing the wires on the fuel gauge if an early car........
