Aye, sounds like they might be a bit low, I think. You might even have a cracked spring - which is what gave my car a pronounced clunk when pulling away or going over bumps - also eventually took the bumpstop off (bizzarely I didn't get any torque steer with it.Im wondering if my rear springs are worn out.. I get a loud clunking noise from the rear when going over small bumps.. and speed bumps are just not funny!! ive got a gap of about an inch between the rear bump stops and the car body... Im assuming the bump stops are hitting the body?? replacing the springs is going to be a real hassle I suspect...

bump stops
KATE...if you have removed the rear axle bump stops then,in
theory your axle is now allowed more than the designed amount
of movement!. Have you since checked if the rear shackles
are hitting the box sections?

cracked?? Ill check. Ive found in the haynes manual that the gap is supposed to be 2", and 1" as a minimum. weird thing is taht the front has only about a 1" gap too... are the torsion bars maybe become a bit twisted over time? Also, how can i check whether the shock absorbers are worn out on the rear?

Press the rear up and down and when you let go it should not bounce more than once if in really good condition if it see saws thay are past their best also have a look for leaks.

Sorry, probably didn't make myself clear; the bumpstop came off while the spring was broken.... I replaced it when I replaced the springKATE...if you have removed the rear axle bump stops then,in

But I thought there was more than an inch gap 'twixt top of bumpstop and bodywork, which is what I was intending to suggest. 'course they might just have gone a bit flat (the springs) - mine certainly had.
