I will be bringing a 1954 morris minor from NZ ,will it need to have a MOT prior to registering in the UK

If the car I imported from Guernsey is anything to go by, then the answer is yes.

DVLA is the place to ask though!!

You can use the car for six months on the NZI ID Then MOT with the NZ plates then use the chassis number for the insurance fill in the form for DVLA I think it's £80

Be careful, as this isn't the case according to DVLA. It's ok if you are non resident here and you bring your car in but I don't think its the case if you live here and drive on a uk license. Seriously though, the MMOC website isn't where I'd be checking this though!

From the experience of a colleague who ran into huge problems when he purchased an imported Mazda Bongo (originally from Japan)

Generally to permanently import a car you will need a "NOVA" number (Notification Of Vehicle Arrival) ISTR that comes from Revenue and Customs, The car may need an MOT as it has not been registered in the UK previously - this will normally be done on the VIN number instead of the registration.

Once you have that in place you can apply to DVLA for the issue of a VRM and V5 and of course licence the car.

The Mazda had issues because the NOVA hadn't been obtained although tax had been paid, the paperwork went to and fro from Swansea several times, and there was even a fine incurred because things were not correctly presented within a specified time. The upshot is that you need to get firm advice from both HMRC about importation taxes and associated paperwork, and from DVLA about what they need and the time-frame involved. Request any leaflets they have on the process as we found that different people have different interpretations of the process and that led to the paperwork being returned by DVLA as what he had been told wasnt correct.

Ironically, a couple of days after he finally got it on the road (which ran into a couple of months with the paperwork snafus) the oil pump failed. Luckily we had one in the yard we were breaking, and the engine from that is now in the import, he has also run into issues with insuring it on a traders policy and is now selling it saying that the whole experience has been one he never wants to repeat. A shame as its a nice Camper van.

The car I imported was a Fiat 500 from Italy so it was local European import it must be different from NZ to UK
