Alternator Conversion Issues *URGENT*
Got a '67 two door 1000 with alternator conversion ,owned for just over a year, great car, super reliable (did an 800 mile adventure around Cornwall, back end of 2014), the car has never given any probs, up until Sunday. Went out for a country road run for about an hour, came home, car sat on the drive for approx. 1hr.....flat battery !! stuck a fresh charged battery on tonight, ignition light stays on & alternator smokes !! (I pulled the battery off quickly !) Nothing obvious, wiring on the conversion is done very well, not a "birds nest" of spaghetti/crimp connectors. I'm mystified, I'm ok at mechanicals, but auto-electrics are not my field (but I can do logical problem solving) Obviously it's a tricky one, as each time I connect the battery, to try & do diagnostics, I'm risking frying the alternator. Please advise, help will be greatly appreciated...Thankyou !!
Re: Alternator Conversion Issues *URGENT*
Are you sure the new battery was conected Negative earth, Would think that if it was ,then you have an internal fault in alternator,if it was smoking then its probably done for now unfortunately. If the old battery was a good one and its drained in an hour then must of had a heavy discharge, could be all related to the alternator, wouldn't think its the wiring since that was ok and hasn't been touched.
Re: Alternator Conversion Issues *URGENT*
As above - battery on right way round? Sounds like a new alternator is required now....it will never recover after 'smoking' ...

Re: Alternator Conversion Issues *URGENT*
Thanks Gents....battery definitely connected correctly (connectors won't fit on the wrong terminals) I'm beginning to think, the alternator has just given up. I don't know it's history/age, although it looks clean & unmolested. Any ideas on how to bench test it ?? It didn't fry for long, might have saved it !! Your help/advise is appreciated, thankyou

There is a test and rebuild thread on the other side...http://morrisminorowners.co.uk/viewtopi ... =20&t=6429 with nice pictures.
If you google lucasfault you will find the lucas fault diagnosis PDF document to download for all the electrics.

It's not worth the time or effort - or expense for parts. Just buy a NEW one ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RTX-Alternato ... 4d009cb0d0
