Gearbox failed and spat this out with the oil

Post by bigwheels »

I'm Just wondering if anyone has successfully repaired a 1098 gearbox and with this fault, this came out with the gearbox oil (key for ease of scaling)
I think its an interlocking ring for 2nd/ 3rd gear.

The symptoms were:- I could just get 2nd gear sometimes if I double declutched but it was pot luck also it instantly dragged itself out of third 3rd gear when engaged . 1st and fourth + reverse were ok and easily selectable.

Thought id share my troubles with you....

You are right in that the washer that has been spat out is the Interlock Washer Pt No: 22G374 which fits between Bush 3rd Gear Pt No: 2A3290 and Bush 2nd Gear Pt No: 2A3298 on the Main Shaft Pt No: 22G119. Unfortunately to repair/rectify means stripping the whole box.
So no wonder you had difficulty engaging and changing gear.
May be better to obtain a good S/H box and repair the damaged one at your leisure.

But as you say - the box was indeed in good condition - so it will be well worth investigating if that's the only difficulty. But yes I ageee - for speed swap in another box meantime. There are (were..) two boxes for sale very cheaply on here a couple of days ago.

Hopefully I'm getting a good used gearbox tomorrow my plan is to repair the other box at my leisure and keep it as a spare if not prohibited by parts costs as there could be more damaged components than the interlock washer Im just wondering what the odds are of Bush 3rd Gear Pt No: 2A3290 and Bush 2nd Gear Pt No: 2A3298 escaping unscathed and reusable as they about £15 each which could render my old gearbox uneconomical to repair! :D

Strip it down and see what the damage is before buying any replacement parts and then reassess the repair costs.
Even if you had to pay the asking price of £30 each for the Bushs 3rd & 2nd gear (which is what some spare suppliers are asking) the gearbox will still be economical to repair and you will have the satisfaction of knowing all is well.

update:-

The gearbox was very repairable. I fitted new bearings interlock washer and two bronze bushes new indent pin and twist clip thingy! new tailshaft bush reamed + tailshaft seal! Its now fitted to the car and working well. It wasn't the easiest job I've done on a vehicle but I got there in the end I could re-con another in much less time as familiarity is key ! Its been an education in gearboxes for me the very first one I've repaired! :D

It was no picnic repairing that gearbox, it would have been easier to start with one that hadn't failed but now I am familiar with them I can see how the recon boys make their money! I reckon I could recon another in a fraction of the time I spent on this one! My plan of getting a good used 1098 gearbox also went to the wall as I got one that engaged all gears great and the bearings rumbled like hell and it always showered the driveway with oil after every outing, as the vehicle is surplus to requirements it didn't get used much with this fault! I guess that's the way it goes with used gearboxes some folk will sell you them in good bad and ugly condition and invariably tell you they are good, worked fine donkeys years ago, blah blah blah! but I only bought it for parts value so only the fitting and removal time lost!

Well done. And now you can recondition the 'used' gearbox....
