BUMP RUBBER CLEARENCE

Post by BLOWNMM »

G’day all
Can anyone tell me the distance between the bump stop and bump rubbers on the rear suspension of a car with normal springs in good condition.
Cheers Bob

As new and used springs these days are an unknown quantity I would set the car as below to determine the exact clearance:-
Set the car (on level ground) with the use of a jack so that the rear spring front eye centre is 10 & 9/16" from the ground and the rear spring upper shackle eye centre is 15 & 7/16" from the ground and the distance between the top of the bump rubber and the chassis/body bump stop is the correct distance for a car at normal ride height with springs in good condition and that is your bump rubber to chassis bump stop clearance target.
See Minor Wksp Man Section R16 for details.
The car must have normal wheels and tyres with the tyres inflated to 22lbsqin.

You can trim down the rear bump rubbers to give something like 1.5/2" clearance. Anything less gives a very 'bumpy' ride. In my view the 5 leaf Saloon springs are far too soft - the 7 leaf Traveller springs are much more realistic -along with good damping of course.

Particularly if you fit the new bumpstops available currently which seem to be made out of a compound as hard as oak :(

Oh dear.... I've asked before if anyone knows of a source of 'Aeon' bump stops suitable for a Minor. These would be the answer with nice progressive action.

Here is the Timbren/Aeon web site and there may be something on here that may be able to be modified to fit the Minor?

It was a standard 'Special Tuning' modification for off-road Minis, and worked well - although they took some punishment! I'll have a look at these links later Phil -thanks.
