Oil light

Hello I have just got a austin a35 I know it's not a minor but it has the same engine it's been stood 3 years when I got it running the oil light was flickering then stayed on I took rocker cover off no oil was splashing anywhere so I have taked sump off and the gauze there was a littl sludge in sump and a bit on gauze is there anything else I can clean or blow out has engine got to come out to get oil pump out any ides thank you ,rae

There's a method of priming the pump but cant remember how to do it sorry. Try taking the plugs out and, with a fully charged battery, spin the engine over. If all is OK then the light should go out.
It could also be the oil pressure relief valve stuck open, check that first.

If it's not a silly question were is the pressure relief valve ,to prime the pump put it all back together with fresh oil is that right

There's a domed nut at the back of the block below the oil pressure switch on the distributer side of the engine. Undo that and there will be a spring and a valve slide in the hole. Take it out clean the valve and the seat and replace.

If the engine doesn't prime up with the plugs out (and use jump leads from another car - because you may need to spin it for a couple of minutes..) then the oil pipe from block to filter should be removed (care - it's easily twisted at the filter..) - and oil squirted in the hole in the block while someone gently turns the engine backwards (plugs still out..) - put in half a pint. Then reassemble and prime up with plugs out. The fact the light flickered suggests the switch is ok -but we can't be sure. Do also fit a new filter element - and make SURE there is a plate and spring under the element when re-assembling. I assume you know to use 20W50 oil...... Morrisons/Wilko is fine for the job.

So you mean remove the oil pipe from block to gauze in the sump does this remove while still in engine or have I got the wrong pipe to bleed it ,cheers ,rae

The external pipe on the drivers side of engine,from external filter to side of engine. Put the sump back on first.

Unless this is an 803 engine *and it shouldn't be if an A35) - it is as above the external pipe to be removed.... I wouldn't worry about the relief valve just yet - with cold oil the light would still go out if there was any oil going round.

Yes - but an A35 should not have an 803 engine. I was making the point that an 803 wouldn't have a pipe to remove - to allow the priming... Early engines DO however have a priming plug on the far back of the engine - just above the drain tap. This can be removed and oil pumped in (again while turning backwards) then refitted and the engine cranked till oil pressure appears. May be easier than removing the pipe.....
