Traveller exhaust system

Post by patrickhowell »

I have a 1971 Traveller, one of the last made, in Birmingham. Recently, I decided to change the rusty mild steel exhaust system for a stainless steel one from Bull Motif. It doesn't fit, bends in the wrong places, causing it to knock against the car floor. Bull Motif has compared this against all other systems in stock, including those in mild steel, and don't have an answer, saying this is the first time they have met the problem. Their system is in three pieces - a logical mod, I suppose, while the old one was one-piece. They ventured the suggestion that the last models, made in Birmingham, may have been modified. Anybody got experience of this, or suggestions, please?

Regretfully it is not unusual to have to modify new parts to fit. There has certainly never been any evidence of modifications as BM suggest.

in my experience the mild steel exhausts exit from the engine bay with plenty of clearance and are a better fit
stainless and mild steel are made by 2 seperate companies

I have a stainless steel manifold, two piece, I do not know where it came from but it fits much like you describe (aka poorly!).

The join on the centre/rear section is over the axle, so the silencer has to be twisted nearly 90 degrees for the tail section to clear the axle. If the joint was on the straight behind the silencer then the sections could be aligned whichever way was suitable
