Flashing indicators not working.

Post by hammersmith »

Hi,
After having removed a radio as it was not working i found some wires had been disconnected from operating the flasher indicators. All had been working prior to removing the radio. I connected the wires where I thought they had come from, but after three days and several blown fuses I have not been able to get the indicators to work. I have not been able to get any power to the Hella flasher unit. Power is going into the hazard switch. Would i be right in thinking that the power should come from the hazard switch into the Hella flasher unit, or is a separate power source required. One of the disconnection I found was the windscreen washer this was fixed as is ok, the other was the TWO GREEN WIRES WITH A BLACK TRACE, with an empty connector on the Hella unit at 49+ connection, i took it that these two green black trace wires went there. Hope this is clear, I would be grateful for any advice. I have attached a diagram. I have a new flasher unit on order from ESM. Thanks again Mike[frame]Image[/frame]

Hi Mike, Looks like a previous owner has added hazards and indicators using non standard wiring.
Can you post a picture of the hazard switch? Looks like it may be similar to an MGB setup in which case your wiring diagram is wrong. If it is similar to MGB I may be able to help using an MGB diagram.

What year is the car? Do you have separate orange indicators?
If you still have the standard flasher can then Light Green goes from P to warning light, Green/Brown from L to indicator switch, Green from B to fuse

Hi beero and mike,
Thanks for reply, the car is 4 door 1957 with upgraded combined Amber and red light rear and white Amber front. It has semphore indicators which are working ok on a separate switch. I will be at it again today so will send picture of the hazard switch. Thanks again mike. :D

Why do the green/black wires connect to a red wire?
See http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Technical Info, Combined Indicator and Trafficator Wiring Diagram. Disconnect the hazards and follow the diagram, then try wiring up the hazards[frame]Image[/frame]

It is not an MGB switch but wiring looks similar.
Looking at your diagram I would say you have one of the green/black trace wires in the wrong place.
One of these wants a green live feed (with ignition on) connected to it. I have copied and amended your diagram.[frame]Image[/frame]

Hi,

Well having spent time again I am afraid that I am still no nearer getting the flashing indicators to work. I have as suggested removed the hazard warning switch. Attached is the lastest diagram. I have run a live feed from the fuse as shown in pink, with the wires as shown connected i get the following. The indicator stalk light comes on the left hand indicator comes on not flashing, turn to go right the stalk light flashes left hand indicator flashes right side, Turn left stalk light comes on lefthand light stays on. If I connect the earth to the flasher unit it blows the fuse. Confused yes, any ideas for confused of Kent would be gratefully received. As you can gather I am not too successful with electrics, oh, did I hear someone say your not bl**dy joking. Theres a few pints or glasses of wine or if you prefer a large coffes, or teas with cakes if you solve this problem. As they say if you accept this mission the computer will self ...........Help please. [frame]Image[/frame]

Hi,

We'll have just come in after trying to find a way to get the indicators working. And guess what I now have flashing indicators, no hazards but what the heck. In the end I could not find a live ignition on green, instead ran a new wire from the fuse, to new flasher unit. Many thanks again to all, Mike.

Hmm - full marks for perseverance.... If you do feel you need 'hazards' - you should maybe try to keep them entirely separate from the indicator circuits..... Is everything else working ok ? Brake lights/wipers/heater.....etc

Hi,

Yes have checked them thanks, can't believe how long it's taken me. I may look at connecting the hazards when we get lighter evening and warmer days.

Thanks again.

An option is to fit a flasher unit into the brake light circuit - with a switch - so it flashes the brake lights. Much easier and just as effective for traffic from the rear - which is generally what you need to worry about .......

Glad you have got your indicators working now.
Looking at your second diagram I'm not surprised it didn't work before.
I have attached a basic diagram to help.
Top part is indicators only, lower part may help if you decide to reconnect hazards.
I have left the colours off as it would appear you have a mix of non-standard colours.
Good luck.[frame]Image[/frame]

Hi,
Thanks Beero, I will keep a copy of this should I take on the task of connecting the hazards. At the moment I am still so relieved I at least got the flashing indicators going.

Thank Mike
